- What is your favorite hobby? Anything on the water – I’ve been a swimmer and boater all my life. In the cold months, I spend time in my basement “brewery” and make variety of different beers, cider, and homemade root beer for my kids.
- What is your favorite travel destination? I’d like to say, “places I’ve never been”. My family and I really like hiking through National Parks, and the excitement of exploring new cities. My family loves to talk about the interesting things we’ve discovered along the way.
- What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? Before my Employee Benefits career started in 1997, I was a youth counselor at a residential facility, and lived in an apartment building that housed developmentally disabled adults. I also did “on call” emergency intervention for group homes and individual families.
- What do you enjoy most about your industry? Relationships with people! I am fortunate to have worked with a substantial number of people for a long period of time across a variety of industries. I also love the diversity of clients and vendors I interact with – everyday is a different experience.
- What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it? Employee benefit plans have a lot of moving parts, and much of it is not terribly straightforward. After delivering accurate but overly technical explanations I found that people would become confused or frustrated in trying to understand their plans. Over time, I learned how to communicate to employees in a way that is relatable in more simple terms.
